How forklift propane is sold

The standard propane forklift cylinder is the 33-pound steel cylinder, which holds 7.9 gallons of liquid propane at 80% fill (propane is sold by mass and the liquid expands with temperature, so cylinders are filled to 80% by liquid volume by federal regulation). The 33lb size is the dominant industrial cylinder because it matches the fork-mounted cylinder bracket on most North American forklift designs (Hyster, Toyota, Yale, Caterpillar, Crown, Mitsubishi). Forklift propane is virtually always sold on a cylinder exchange basis, not by bulk fill. Large fleets (50+ forklifts, 500+ cylinders per month) can negotiate per-cylinder pricing closer to $18-$22, which translates to roughly $2.30 to $2.80 per gallon equivalent. Very large warehouse operations (Amazon, FedEx, Walmart distribution centres) with thousands of cylinders per month and on-site cylinder filling capability can land below $2.00 per gallon, approaching the residential-supplier wholesale benchmark. Why the per-gallon premium exists

Indoor air quality and forklift propane

Propane forklifts can be operated indoors with proper ventilation. OSHA 1910.110 and ANSI/ITSDF B56.1 set the standards. The cleanest commercially available forklift engines burn HD-5 specification propane (see the HD-5 page) with three-way catalytic converters that meet the same tailpipe standards as on-road light-duty propane vehicles. The largest lever is operator training. The second lever is engine maintenance: filters, fuel system service, and spark plug replacement on schedule keep engine combustion efficient. The third lever is right-sizing: a 6,000-pound forklift running 3,000-pound average loads burns roughly the same fuel as a 4,000-pound machine running the same loads; choosing the right machine for the duty cycle matters.
